He is extremely knowledgeable about the birds, plants and other wildlife on Roatan. He went above and beyond to ensure that we saw various fascinating creatures in their natural habitat. Our day was filled with visiting different ecosystems. He was very personable and was able to explain things to us in layman's terms. We had corresponded back-and-forth on WhatsApp, and he wanted to know what our objective for our day was. Did we want to focus on a certain species or just see as many birds as possible? When our day begin, he restated our objective that we had decided upon. At each point in our day, he would tell us what was coming up and what we would probably see there. If there weren’t any birds to see at the moment, he had vast knowledge of the local plants, insects, reptiles, mammals, and amphibians that he showed us. We saw several vine snakes, a Common Basilisk lizard, smooth-billed Anis, a Northern Potoo, Golden-fronted Woodpeckers, and numerous other birds and animals. We were able to photograph and feed local hummingbirds. He taught us a lot about the local floura. He even jumped out of his car and rescued a vine snake from an intersection! He took very good care of us, stopping multiple times to get us cold water, as it was a very hot day. Joel was knowledgeable, professional, enthusiastic, and very personable. Had an amazing time with Joel on our wildlife tour, saw lots of animals, heard lots of stories about the history of wildlife on Roatan and the Bay Islands. Visited the animal sanctuary on Maya Cay and it was great to hear the caretaker speak about the wildlife that lives there. He is the kind of guide you are looking for. He is passionate and incredibly knowledgeable about everything on the island and where to find them. We went on his trip specifically for birding and saw so much! It was the first time my niece Nicole and my sister-in-law Jen had birded with a guide and their first visit outside the US or Canada. It will be hard to keep them happy after Joel set the bar so high! Scheduled on-line and via e-mail. Joel was early to pick us up in a comfy SUV. Warm welcome and off to get the targets. I've birded Roatan previously, but worked a lot harder to get the same species in the past. We were teasing him that he had the birds trained and on a schedule! Seriously efficient and such knowledge of not just the birds, but plants, reptiles, habitats, culture, history. There were only a few possible lifers left for me and Northern Potoo was one of them. Not only did we get the Northern Potoo, but while Joel had one in the scope, Jen noticed a hatchling! Couldn't be but a couple of days old! We were on private land. I teased Jorge that he was a grandpa while we just marveled at our good fortune! Way to exceed expectations. Another stop and we were treated to a juvenile Northern Potoo, with a clean line of sight. My other target was Caribbean Dove, which is a very shy species. That took more time and effort, but Joel stayed with it, even through the dramatic 9-banded Armadillo surprise encounter and ensuing drama. No birders or armadillo were harmed, but it was exciting. Great lifers, great memories and with the sad news of a mutual friend passing, a few moments to reflect on how fortunate we are to be in a remarkable place enjoying great company and amazing wildlife.Posted onTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. It started early when I contacted him about the possibility of going on a trip. He responded to me quickly and gave me the information I requested. The cruise ship we were traveling on changed itinerary and he was able to accommodate the change. We had no trouble connecting with him once we reached the port. The birds were amazing. We opted for the half day tour. Joel took us to all the hot spots! My wife and I added many birds to our life list. There was a point where we stopped and he said “stand over here in the shade…yes right there…the birds will come” and they did. Later at another stop “just sit on the bench right there and wait” and the hummingbirds showed up. Amazing experience. Highly recommended. We are very much armature bird watchers and we were really just looking for a different kind of experience on our vacation. Joel was such an excellent, knowledgeable guide who made us feel very capable of finding great birds. Along the tour we were able to learn so much about the pants, animals, and habitats of Roatan and I would recommend this tour to anyone!
