He is an expert on birds and where to find them, and also about other wildlife and plants on Roatan. He took great care to find our target birds and we got solid sightings and awesome photos. He was flexible enough to accommodate us during our Caribbean cruise. He was friendly and very knowledgeable about local birds and plants. We were happy to get several life birds and excellent looks at specialties such as Canivet's Emerald, Mangrove Vireo, and Velasquez's Golden-fronted Woodpecker. Also worth mentioning, his vehicle is large and comfortably fits 3 birders and all their gear. Joel took us on a fabulous Birdwatching+ tour this morning. The birdwatching was great even given that it drizzled rain for a good part of the tour (he even provided umbrellas for us!) We saw many new bird species. On top of that (the + part of the Birdwatching + tour) was lots of information and sightings of plants and animals - hermit crabs, blue land crabs, vine snake, cecropia trees, traveler palms, and so much more. He picked us up on time in a comfortable vehicle, provided water and snacks, and gave us a running commentary on the history/geology/flora/fauna of this unique island. Wow, what a great experience with Joel, seeing birds for a half-day with my girlfriend and her mom. Probably the best birding experience I've had to date. Joel took us to about five different locations--including the national park, and a unique wetlands area that had the island's only Flamingo. We saw 40+ bird species, including a melanistic Green Heron, a pair of endangered Green-Naped Amazons, and many others that went above and beyond of what I could have expected (along with a lot of bonus unique Roatan flora and fauna, non-birds as well). For what it's worth, I added 15 birds to my life list on eBird, and also got to see some of my favorite Warblers, which I'd mentioned to Joel beforehand was my favorite thing to see. Joel is a fantastic bird guide and naturalist! He took me on a half-day tour, and I got five lifers! He has deep knowledge of the ecosystems on Roatan and all the animals (not just birds), which he eagerly shares. Lots of woodpeckers. Joel was very knowledgeable and a good guide. His connections allow for access to places only a few can go. The car was comfortable and large enough. He took us to a number of areas we would never have been able to find on our own, and taught us about local and migratory species, their calls, and much more.
